Tjeerd van der Ploeg English organ culture in the 19th century

The English organs that have been placed in The Netherlands are almost all instruments from the 19th century, the period in which the English organ in a short time underwent a complete transfiguration. This process is described in this article. The most important organ builders are introduced and the characteristics of the 19th-century English organ discussed. The article opens with a short backward glance toward the 17th and 18th centuries, to make the changes in English organ building easier to understand.
