|Hanna Rijken||“Loud Organs, His Glory, Forth Tell in Deep Tone” - Anglican Choral Evensong in the Dutch context
Het ORGEL 113 (2017), nr. 1, 4-9 [summary]
Choral evensong services are held in more and more places in the Netherlands. Dutch boys’ choirs or mixed choirs sing - outside the context of the Anglican church - a complete English liturgy with preces and responses, psalms as chant, canticles, an anthem, and hymns. There are also readings and spoken prayers. These choral evensong services are usually held in monumental churches, and are attended by large numbers of people, not only church members but also non-members. The growing practice of choral evensong in a secularized land like the Netherlands raises questions. What are the reasons for the popularity at this particular time? This article studies the adoption of Anglican choral evensong in the Netherlands.
