|Peter Ouwerkerk||Toulouse les Orgues, or, About economy and organ culture
Het ORGEL 111 (2015), nr. 1, 36-41 [summary]
The 19th ‘Festival International Toulouse les Orgues’ took place from 2 to 12 October of this year in the southern French city of Toulouse. The festival has managed to make itself an accepted part of cultural life in the past 20 years in Toulouse. This article contains not only a report on the festival, but also makes a comparison with Dutch concert conditions.
In comparison with Dutch organ concerts it is noteworthy that the festival concerts are attended not only by organ fans, and also that, although the concerts are not free, they are nevertheless well attended. This is natural in French culture, where it is completely normal to pay for quality. Also important to the success of the festival is its professional public relations and marketing. The festival ‘Toulouse les Orgues’ demonstrates the incorrectness of the Dutch custom of offering high-quality organ concerts for free or for a small price.
